This course has taught me the importance of editing my works multiple times before getting to the final product. I have always enjoyed writing-based on other courses but the element of science made it a bit more challenging for me. Within the rhetorical situation and scientific controversy papers, I was more attentive to the guidelines of a rhetorical situation and highlighted the aspects of the author, audience, text, genre, and purpose of a written passage. Also, as the semester progressed and the assignment for the virtual field studies came about I had to sift through articles and distinguish what was important to focus on for my writing, and what needed to be omitted. It is important to be concise, and effectively display my understanding of researched text. Collaborating with classmates was sometimes effective to spot small errors to revise for the final assignment. For example, for the Formal Introduction assignment, a classmate was very helpful with her critiques of staying on track with my central ideas. Also, reading a written piece out loud to your peers is helpful because it allows you to adjust for better sentence fluency. The most interesting part of this course and the most challenging was the media aspect of it. I am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to visuals so this portion of the semester was quite time-consuming. I appreciate the time I invested in both Virtual Field Studies in terms of research and visual presentation to ensure accessibility. Locating resources from databases was fairly easy to incorporate into my routine when conducting research. However balancing texts to fit my argument was sometimes a challenge as well as finding documentation to support prior knowledge. However, with practice, it became a bit easier to do especially regarding my Scientific Controversy Paper. Overall this class improved my skills as a writer and I plan to continue to utilize the techniques of a rhetorical situation.
